Solutions for Oracle Coherence Users

“A big part of this new release [of RTView for Oracle Coherence] is enabling not only advanced alerting functionality, but also deep analytics regarding the health of a Coherence implementation across numerous dimensions, including the underlying JVM."

Assure Availability and Performance of Oracle Coherence Applications

Oracle Coherence is often a critical component of extreme or high-value business applications, especially for industries such as financial services, transportation and
E-commerce. The challenge is that the Oracle Coherence environment is highly distributed, making it tough to validate whether Coherence is performing as designed.  And, even when problems are discovered, it can be difficult to determine the underlying cause without the ability to collect, analyze, correlate and display real-time metrics about the Oracle Coherence system and its behavior.

RTView for Oracle Coherence is a real-time monitoring and management application for Oracle Coherence grids and clusters, built using RTView as the underlying platform. The solution can be used out-of-the-box for effective monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting of Oracle Coherence systems, enabling IT Operations and Application teams to validate that Coherence is running as expected, and quickly diagnose and troubleshoot issues if something goes wrong.

Real-time Visibility into Configuration and Activity Metrics

Without visibility into caches, application clients, and system resources, it can be difficult to validate that configurations are as expected with each new code release, especially when they involve a high number of caches, each with varying size, behaviors, and workload.

RTView for Oracle Coherence provides real-time visibility into every available Coherence metric, along with aggregation into higher-level views that summarize information across nodes, caches, or the entire cluster, enabling users to immediately verify if configurations are working as designed, and Coherence is performing at optimal levels. Users can also extend RTView displays to model and monitor the entire Coherence environment at-a-glance.

Real-Time Alerting and Alert Management for Clusters and Applications

For IT Operations and Applications teams, real-time alerting is an important requirement for ensuring clusters are up and running.

RTView for Coherence includes out-of-the-box alerting, providing early warning of critical issues and events that take place within the Coherence environment. The alerts can be correlated to immediately show the business impact of issues within any part of the application stack. The alert administration dashboard enables users to easily activate alerts, and set alert thresholds and duration.

The alert system can send notifications via email, pages, or SNMP traps when specific conditions are encountered, like excessive network delays or high memory utilization.  Additionally, users can configure automated actions tied to alerts, such as executing custom code when a specific alert is triggered.

Alert management includes:

  • Alert activation
  • Setting alert thresholds and duration
  • Comments field
  • Acknowledge or clear alerts
  • View alert history

Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

As cluster size and complexity increase, troubleshooting issues in a distributed system like Oracle Coherence become more convoluted, making it essential to understand Coherence cluster behavior and the demands a particular application is making on the cluster.

With RTView for Oracle Coherence, users are not only able to view real-time displays about important metrics like memory utilization of the JVM, and node/network/cache performance, but they are also able to drill down for further detail to quickly diagnose the underlying cause of an issue, and troubleshoot it before it impacts the business.

The solution exposes JMX methods available with Coherence to quickly address problems in an emergency.  For example, with the right authorizations, an admin is able to increase capacity in a cache running out of memory, stop a problem node, or change other settings to improve production performance of the system.  These “command and control” features may be extended to include more cluster or application management features as desired.

Users may also want to confirm that the monitoring system itself is working correctly. When aberrant behavior is detected, for example, users can validate that the data was collected accurately by drilling down into the raw data collected from the monitored system, to view details like the time of the request, the time stamps in the data itself, or how long the queries took.
